Sunny Border Nurseries, Inc. has been a leading wholesale grower for over 85 years offering one of the most extensive selections of perennial plants around.  We sell finished, container-grown plant material, including new introductions from around the world and over 3000 named Perennial plant varieties, from Acanthus to Zizia. You name it, we've got it! Our Perennial plant line includes a large selection of Alpines, Ferns, Grasses, and Edibles.

We are also the home of the Bodacious Temperennial™! Sunny Border CEO Pierre Bennerup, himself, coined the term "Temperennial™"; a term now being used across the industry to describe tropicals and tender perennials becoming increasingly popular for seasonal use. Our Temperennial™ Program includes everything from Alocasia (Elephant Ear) to Musa (Banana), with the program including a good mix of popular annuals as well.

The highly trained staff here at Sunny Border has years of experience, which is imperative given the expansive range of plant varieties that we carry. That said, we also enjoy sharing the good things in life with our fellow colleagues, family, friends, and of course our plants. We love what we do!

History

Sunny Border Founder, Robert Bennerup, started the business in 1929 in Yonkers, NY and moved his family to Norwalk, CT in 1937,where he changed the name of the business to Norwalk Perennial Gardens. In 1945, Robert moved the family and business one last time and purchased 135 acres of property in Berlin (Kensington), CT, where the nursery remains to this day. In 1947, Sunny Border received great acclaim for a Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue', a hybrid that Robert Bennerup brought back to the US from Denmark. It remains popular to this day.

Robert Bennerup passed away on April 4, 1967 but his memory lives on through his plant discoveries and rich family heritage. Robert's wife took over day to day operations at the nursery after Robert's passing until 1969 when their son, Pierre Bennerup, purchased the nursery. From that point on, the nursery has continued to grow immensely. The nursery is currently comprised of 222 total acres with 52 Greenhouses and is led by Sunny Border CEO, Pierre Bennerup and President, Marc Laviana. We look forward to continuing our rich history as a leading grower and innovator in the green industry.
