Dave's Raves!

Sunny Border V.P. of Sales and Marketing and plant expert, Dave Culp talks up his favorite plants of the week! If you’ve ever had the pleasure of attending one of Dave’s talks on the hort lecture circuit, you know you’re in for a treat!

Dianthus barbatus

Digitalis 'Digiplexis Illumination Flame'

One of our Temperennial selections of Color Sells, this Digitalis/Isoplexis cross gives dense spikes of brilliant red flowers with warm orange-yellow throats that bloom throughout summer, making it a no-brainer for season-long impact. 36" tall, takes full sun to partial shade. Love this stunner!

Liatris aspera

Iresine herbstii ‘Red Heart’

This South American native has stunning, dark crimson red, heart-shaped foliage with red venation. The well-branched plants grow to 20" tall, with an upright habit. Ideal for combinations, beds, mixed borders and both indoor and outdoor containers.

Penstemon mexicali 'Peregrin'

Leucanthemum ‘Angel Daisy™’

hate to use the word adorable for a plant, but this one might fit the bill. A compact, long-bloom Shasta Daisy with lightly fragrant, double white flowers that have pompom centers. Blooms late spring through summer with consistent deadheading. Only 6-12" tall with a 12" spread, this petite daisy is wonderful along the border! Like any Shasta daisy, prefers full sun to partial shade.

Astilbe ‘Chocolate Shogun'

A definite sho-off, this Astilbe really stands out with it's dark, chocolate-maroon foliage and contrasting blush pink/white flower spikes. Loves shade. Use it en masse in a woodland border, or as contrast in the shade garden. Prefers moist soil - not drought tolerant, but durable and pest-free. A sure sho-stopper! Ok, I'll stop with the puns now.

Liatris aspera

Leucanthemum ‘White Mountain®’

This new variety is gaining fame for being one of the earliest blooming of the large Leucanthemum. Large white, lightly fragrant shasta daisies bloom spring through fall on compact foliage growing 18-24" tall. Regular deadheading promotes continuous bloom. Great for gardens or containers!

Penstemon mexicali 'Peregrin'

Salvia nemorosa ‘Swifty® Deep Rose’

Salvia are a dependable perennial for their intense show of color - well now it's gotten even better with the Swifty series! Sporting better branching and a higher yield of deep rose flower spikes, this Salvia is sure to impress. Performs well in full sun with good drought tolerance - makes this a no brainer for a summer garden!
