Growing Programs

Sunny Border's diverse plant collection has been organized into several growing programs. Each program has been carefully designed for simplicity, efficiency and high quality. This has been the Sunny Border heritage and pride since 1929.

Perennials

Perennials, our largest program, consists of over 3,000 different species and hybrids all of which are available throughout the year. We have stock available for sale from late March into November. Sunny Border has an extensive assortment of perennials in our product line, with everything from Acanthus to Zizia. In fact, we have over 250 genus groups represented in our program. Our selection is hard to match!perennial collection

Bodacious Temperennials™

Temperennial Landscape in Connecticut CT

Our Bodacious Temperennials™ pack a punch with bold flower colors and exciting foliage textures and color. The plants in our program are most often perennials that are tender in areas outside their own native regions. That said, they have so much appeal, for their fabulous colors or tropical look, that they have become very valuable when it comes to outfitting patios, decks, terraces and in commercial and residential landscaping. From the time Pierre Bennerup came up with the Temperennial™ brand, a decade ago, demand for this exciting group of plants has been on the rise. Coincidence? We think not.

Rock Garden & Alpine

Sunny Border Nurseries Rock Garden

With over 500 varieties in our program, we pride ourselves with having one of the largest collections around for a grower who's prime specialty is not Rock Garden & Alpine. There are so many more of these adorable little plants than one usually sees with the popular rock garden and groundcover brands currently on the market.

These diminutive treasures are well suited for rock gardens and borders, with many that also work well for areas with foot traffic, rock wall crevices and more. All are very amenable to tough conditions. All are available in 3" pots with assortment trays and limited quantities of planted troughs also available.

Ferns

Sunny Border Ferns

We love our ferns. It’s as simple as that. They are truly a gem when it comes to naturalizing and adding texture to those shady or semi-shady spots in the landscape. Nothing is more soothing to the eye and calming to the spirit then an outcropping of ferns in the garden.

The Japanese knew this when designing their gardens, which strive to recreate the landscape as close to nature as possible. By paying attention to the subtle colors, shapes and sizes of ferns, you can create a magical space in the garden. With over 60 varieties to choose from, our fern program offers something for everyone. And last but not least, they are easy to grow and deer resistant! What more could you want!

Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses Molinia and Miscanthus

Our collection of grasses is well-balanced and diverse, including everything from the oldest varieties available, many of which are East-Coast natives, to the newest species and cultivars. Ornamental grasses are popping up everywhere these days, from private landscape design to municipal plantings. It’s no wonder, with all the varying textures, colors and the majestic feel they lend to the landscape. An added bonus is the sound and movement created when the wind hits their blades or inflorescence. Whether you’re looking for full sun grasses like Miscanthus and Pennisetum, those preferring part shade like Carex or full shade varieties like Hakonechloa - we’ve got them and more!

Vines

The “tried and true” performers in our vine collection really add sizzle to the landscape. Vines are great as a vertical accent, easily climbing trellises, pergolas, arbors and gazebos and adding interest and color as they grow. We have clematis reaching 12-15’ in a single season. We also offer non-clinging (non-climbing) clematis, perfect for the small garden or containers. Or choose climbing Hydrangea, for shady spots in need of help. It will attach itself to a tree as easily as a fence, adding another dimension to any garden space.

There is something for every need in our vine collection, whether it be to create a focal point, add height, add drama or even to dress up unsightly elements such as fencing.

Green Roof

GreenGrid Modules

To date, Sunny Border has grown and distributed more than 700,000 square ft. of GreenGrid® green roof system modules to job sites throughout the northeast, mid-atlantic and mid-west states. These include projects for large corporations like Ikea, Starbucks and Hannaford as well as many federal and state government buildings. We’ve also grown for installations at secondary schools and many colleges and universities including Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, WPI and University of Maryland.

We continually work to develop plant mixes that best meet the customers needs for the project at hand. This can include anything from providing plants that attract butterflies to coming up with plant lists that help to accomplish both environmental and design objectives at the same time.

We are very excited to play a key role in helping to build a cleaner, more energy efficient and more beautiful world, as a grower of plants used in the green roof industry.

Through our partnership with Weston Solutions®, Inc. we’ve had the pleasure of growing and distributing GreenGrid® System modules for more than five years now.

The lightweight, modular design of the GreenGrid® System allows for easy installation and easier roof maintenance and repair than many rooftop systems that have been on the market. In addition, the modules come “pre-planted” allowing for fast, efficient installation, advanced plant development and built-in water retention. Modules are composed of 100% post-industrial recycled material, manufactured in the USA. This can contribute towards various LEED® Credits, including Recycled Content.”
